10-Inch Square Quilt Block Book Review: Inside This Essential Quilting Block Guide

March 28, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

You know those quilting books that feel less like a “sit and read” book and more like a tool you keep beside the cutting mat? That was my first impression when I started flipping through the 10-Inch Square Quilt Block Book from Connecting Threads.

I sat down with it intending to just skim a few pages, and before I knew it I was mentally planning three different quilts. It’s one of those books where every couple of pages makes you stop and think, “Oh that block would be gorgeous in scraps…”

The entire book focuses on a very practical concept: 10-inch quilt blocks that are easy to combine into larger quilts.

Why 10-Inch Blocks Are So Useful

There’s a reason a lot of quilters gravitate toward larger blocks. They sew up faster, they’re easier to handle, and they make planning layouts much simpler.

The blocks in this book are designed around that 10-inch finished size, which means you can easily mix and match them to build a quilt without having to constantly recalculate measurements.

If you enjoy designing quilts yourself rather than following a single fixed pattern, this kind of reference book becomes incredibly useful.

What You’ll Find Inside the Book

As I flicked through the book, what stood out was the sheer variety of quilt block styles included.

The collection includes everything from classic traditional blocks to more geometric patchwork layouts. Some of the designs feel very vintage, while others lean toward modern quilting styles depending on the fabric you choose.

Inside the book you’ll find:

  • dozens of 10-inch quilt block patterns
    • clear cutting and piecing instructions
    • diagrams that make construction easy to follow
    • block layouts that can be combined into larger quilt designs

Because all the blocks share the same finished size, you can start experimenting with layouts right away.

Blocks That Immediately Caught My Eye

Whenever I browse a quilt block book, there are always a few designs that make me pause.

Several of the star blocks in this book are especially striking. They have that classic patchwork look that works beautifully in both traditional fabrics and modern color palettes.

I also noticed a few geometric blocks that would look fantastic in scrappy quilts, where the variety of fabrics really brings the design to life.

This kind of book is perfect for those moments when you’re standing in front of your fabric stash wondering what to make next.

The Layout and Instructions

One of the things I appreciated while looking through the book was how clean and practical the layout feels.

The diagrams are clear, the cutting instructions are straightforward, and the construction steps are easy to follow without feeling overly technical.

It’s the kind of quilting reference book that works well whether you’re:

  • planning a full quilt
    • experimenting with block combinations
    • looking for inspiration for scrap projects

Who This Quilt Block Book Is Best For

After flipping through the pages, I’d say this book will appeal most to:

  • quilters who enjoy designing their own quilt layouts
    • anyone looking for a reliable block reference guide
    • scrap quilters who like mixing different blocks together
    • beginners ready to explore classic quilt block construction

Because all the blocks are built around the same finished size, it’s very beginner-friendly when it comes to quilt planning.

Would I Recommend It?

If you enjoy having a go-to reference book of quilt blocks, this is definitely the sort of title that earns a permanent spot on the shelf.

It’s not just a one-project book. Instead, it’s a design resource you’ll come back to repeatedly whenever you’re planning a new quilt or experimenting with block layouts.

For quilters who like flexibility, creativity, and a little room to design their own quilts, this book is a very handy addition to the craft library.
