If you have young children, this would be a nice learning activity for them to do today, on Memorial Day. It’s a free download I found over at Startwrite.com.
Now, the use can be expanded. For quilters, why not print this on fabric – add batting and backing – and practice your quilting stitches, by hand, or on a domestic machine.

You totally cheapened it by adding the last sentence. Summer does not “officially” start until June 21. Memorial Day is a remembrance of our fallen soldiers from all wars. Summer has nothing to do with it. As a veteran, I am apalled and insulted.

Theresa, the editor didn’t create the worksheet. Follow the link to the educational site and let them know how it made you feel. Also, perhaps let the history channel know, since the same sentiment was voiced on their Memorial Day intro video.
We know the reason for Memorial Day – the add on is only to point out that the day happens to also signal the start of summer, not that this is the reason for the holiday.

Theresa,
you do have a point. The creator might have used the word “unofficial” instead of “official”. However, I went to my first BBQ yesterday, so in addition to honoring those who died for our country, Memorial Day has evolved into a way to mark a season change. I don’t think the creator of this worksheet meant to imply the season change is equal in significance to remembering our war dead. –Scarlett
