Video Tutorial – 5 WAYS TO USE UGLY FABRIC

February 1, 2023 by Shellie Wilson

We all receive ‘Ugly’ Fabric at some point. Sometimes we receive it with other fabric, or simply our tastes change.

But what is an Ugly Fabric?

When it comes to quilting, “ugly fabric” is a term used to describe fabrics that people don’t really like or find unattractive. It’s kind of a subjective thing, because what one person finds ugly, another person might think is totally cool.

Some quilters like to use these fabrics on purpose, though! They might add them to their quilts to make things more interesting or to create a contrast in their designs. Other quilters might use them as a challenge – like, can they take something that’s not so pretty and turn it into something beautiful?

At the end of the day, though, the term “ugly fabric” is usually used in a lighthearted way.

Quilting is all about expressing yourself and making something that’s uniquely yours, and that means you get to pick whatever fabrics you like – even if other people think they’re ugly!

So, if you’re working on a quilt and someone says one of your fabrics is ugly, just remember: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What can I do with Ugly Fabric?

Well, if you’ve got some “ugly fabric” lying around, there are a few things you can do with it! One option is to embrace the ugliness and use it as a fun accent in your quilt. Maybe it’s a bold print that you can use to make a statement, or a bright color that you can use to add some pop to your design.

Another option is to use your ugly fabric as a challenge. Can you find a way to make it work in your quilt, even if it’s not your favorite? Sometimes, these kinds of challenges can lead to really creative solutions, and you might end up with a quilt that’s even more interesting and unique because of it.

Of course, if you really don’t like your ugly fabric, you can always save it for a future project or donate it to someone else who might be able to use it. Just because it’s not your style doesn’t mean it’s not someone else’s!

At the end of the day, quilting is all about having fun and expressing yourself. So whether you love your fabric or think it’s totally ugly, the most important thing is to enjoy the process and create something that you’re proud of.

Can I donate it instead?

Yes, it is absolutely okay to donate ugly fabric! Just because a fabric is not your style or preference, doesn’t mean that it won’t be useful to someone else. In fact, many quilters are happy to receive donated fabric of any kind, as it can help them stretch their budget and allow them to create more quilts.

Donating fabric is a great way to support your local quilting community or charitable organizations that use quilts to provide comfort and warmth to those in need. If you have a local quilt guild or quilting group, they may have information on where you can donate fabric. Additionally, there are many online resources for donating fabric, such as Quilts of Valor, Quilts for Kids, and Project Linus.

So, if you have some “ugly fabric” that you’re not sure what to do with, consider donating it. You might be surprised how much it is appreciated and how it can be put to good use!

A video tutorial!

Here is a quick and easy quilt pattern video that transforms into a quilt in a minute. It is easy to adjust to your fabric using this method. It has four other approaches to utilize those ‘ugly’ fabrics as well. Therefore, grab your cup of tea and relax.
