Mini Star Quilt Inspired by Old English Tiles

June 17, 2020 by Shellie Wilson

This is a quilting project that is light on commitment – all in terms of time, effort, and fabric. The tutorial uses foundation paper piecing method, with free foundation paper pattern for download, but I have also included a template for the individual shapes, in case my readers want to make the star block featured in this mini quilt using conventional piecing method.

The tutorial is heavily supported with clear step-by-step illustrations and photos. it is a good start for those who are just leaning foundation paper piecing (this was MY first foundation paper piecing project!). It is my hope that such clear illustrations and photos would give my beginner-level readers the confidence to give this project a try, and if the reader is an experienced quilter, then I hope that they would at least benefit from the free templates.

The end result of my mini star quilt was far from perfect, and I do not try to hide this in my article and photos. As with the rest of my blog posts, my goal is to share my sewing and quilting experience with my readers. See the full tutorial here.

Free GO! Diamonds in the Rough Wall Hanging Pattern

The GO! Diamonds in the Rough Wall Hanging Pattern shows just how dramatically clever colour placement can transform a traditional quilt block.

Designed by Lissa LaGreca of Lovingly Lissa, this 30-inch square wall hanging uses the GO! Double Star 10-inch Finished Die. Although the entire project is cut using one Block on Board die, the finished layout creates a sparkling diamond design that looks wonderfully intricate.

I love the potential for experimenting with colour. Choose rich jewel tones for a gemstone effect, bright modern fabrics for something bold or soft neutrals for a more understated wall hanging.

The pattern is currently available as a free download for AccuQuilt members. You will need a free account and the GO! Double Star 10-inch Finished Die to make it.

This is a lovely smaller project for trying the Double Star die without committing to a full quilt. At 30 x 30 inches, it is large enough to make an impact but still manageable to piece, quilt and display.
