How To Declutter Your Quilting Stash For The New Year

January 1, 2024 by Shellie Wilson

Decluttering your fabric stash is a crucial step in maintaining a productive and organized quilting space. The following guide, adapted from principles inspired by the KonMari method, provides a step-by-step approach to help you efficiently declutter and organize your fabric collection.  Below we have included a 10-day declutter guide and a 30 day declutter guide.

10 fabric organizing ideas

Guide to Decluttering Your Fabric Stash:

  1. Remove All Fabric:
    • Take everything out of your sewing space or storage area.
    • Gather all fabric in one giant pile, allowing you to see your entire collection at once.
    • Consider moving it to a separate room for a fresh perspective.
  2. Set Up Keep, Donate, and Sell Boxes:
    • Before purging fabric, set up 2 to 3 boxes or areas for fabric that you’ll keep, donate, or sell.
    • This provides a designated place for the next steps in the decluttering process.
  3. Sort Your Fabric:
    • Use the KonMari method by holding each fabric piece and assessing if it sparks joy.
    • If a fabric doesn’t bring joy or induces negative feelings, consider letting it go.
    • Ask specific decluttering questions related to color schemes, styles, plans, and preferences.
  4. Donate or Sell Purged Fabric:
    • After identifying fabrics that no longer spark joy, consider donating or selling them.
    • Reach out to quilter friends or organizations creating charity quilts.
    • Utilize online platforms like eBay, Etsy, or Instagram for selling or destashing.
  5. Reorganize Your Fabric Stash Using KonMari Method:
    • Fold fabrics using the KonMari method by folding on each side toward the center and then lengthwise.
    • Adapt the vertical storage method if it suits your preferences.

Additional Tips for Purging Your Fabric Stash:

  1. Take Everything Out:
    • Empty your sewing room or dedicated space entirely, making the decision-making process easier.
  2. Move Back Only What You Love:
    • Return only items you genuinely love and plan to use, avoiding unnecessary clutter.
  3. Keep a Trash and Donate Bin Handy:
    • Simplify the process by having designated bins for trash and items to donate.
  4. Be Realistic:
    • Evaluate your collection realistically, considering your current quilting style and preferences.
  5. Reward Yourself:
    • Incentivize the decluttering process by rewarding yourself with sewing time for each organizing effort.
  6. Donate or Sell Unloved Fabrics:
    • Choose between donating to support others or selling fabrics online to give them a new home.
  7. Persistency is Key:
    • Understand that decluttering might take time, and it’s essential to persist throughout the process.

By following these comprehensive steps and additional tips, you can effectively declutter your fabric stash, creating a more joyful and organized quilting space. Happy quilting!
