If choosing a color palette for your next/first quilt seems daunting to the point of never starting, this post is for you. Or, if you just want to have some fun playing with color for any artistic endeavor, join me. And follow these steps.
- Dig through your own photos, and pick some with colors you really like.
- Get them into a digital format and place in a folder on your PC/laptop/other device.
- Get yourself over to Anne Sullivan’s fun-to-use Palette Builder 2.1.
- Upload your photo to the tool.
- Play.
Tip: When I first uploaded my photo – I snapped it on my way out of Dempsey Bakery – I was not pleased with the default colors that appeared just below the photo. That’s because the white circles did not land where I thought they should. But, I just moved them around, so one landed on the chair in the foreground (love that color), and then the back wall, which gave me a saturated red. I continued until I had a palette that felt right to me.
One last tip: Color evokes feelings in us, so don’t use your head on choosing colors, use your heart.
Editor’s note: As with anyone who suffers with food allergies, it can be a challenge to get through the holidays, birthdays or even a day and not eat something you mustn’t. I want to take a minute to thank the Dempsey family for their wonderful allergen-free bakery. I love going there for their milk bread, cheese straws and Everyday bread. On one Saturday morning visit, I overheard a conversation between a boy and his mom. He was peering inside the glass case and blurted out, “You mean I can have anything I want”? Imagine the joy that mom surely felt getting to say “Yes”.
