5 Types of Precut Fabrics for Quilting

January 22, 2022 by Claudia Porter

Precut fabrics are a great option for quilters of all levels, from beginner to advanced. As the name suggests, they are pre-cut pieces of fabric that come in various sizes and are sold in packs. These packs of precut fabric make it easy to get started on a quilting project without having to worry about the time-consuming task of cutting and measuring fabric. This convenience allows quilters to jump right into the creative process and start sewing right away.

There are different types of precut fabrics, including charm packs, jelly rolls, fat quarters, and layer cakes. Each of these precuts has its own unique size and is ideal for specific types of quilting projects. For example, charm packs contain 5 inch squares of fabric and are great for making quilt blocks and smaller projects like table runners and wall hangings. Jelly rolls are 2.5 inch strips of fabric that are ideal for strip quilts and other projects that require long strips of fabric. Fat quarters are half-yard cuts of fabric that have been cut in half vertically, making them 18 x 22 inches in size. They are ideal for larger projects, such as full-sized quilts, as they provide a wider variety of fabric options. Layer cakes are 10 inch squares of fabric that are perfect for larger quilts, as well as smaller projects like table runners and wall hangings.

Precuts are a great way to save time and effort when quilting, but they also provide the opportunity to experiment with different fabric combinations and color palettes. Quilters can use precut fabrics to create unique and diverse quilts, while still maintaining a cohesive look. They are also a great way to use up scraps and leftover fabric from other projects.

One of the biggest benefits of using precut fabrics is that they allow quilters to quickly see how different fabrics and color combinations will look together. This allows quilters to make more informed decisions about fabric selection and to see how different color palettes and prints will look in their quilt. Precuts also provide quilters with a quick and easy way to add color and interest to their quilts without having to search for and purchase individual pieces of fabric.

In conclusion, precut fabrics are a fantastic resource for quilters of all levels. They offer the convenience of pre-cut pieces, the opportunity to experiment with different fabric combinations and color palettes, and the ability to create unique and diverse quilts. Whether you’re a beginner just starting out, or an experienced quilter looking for new and exciting fabric options, precut fabrics are a must-have resource for all quilters.

Connecting Threads sells all types of precuts imaginable in gorgeous fabric selections. You can see their selection here.

Fat Eighths, for example, are pieces of fabric that are cut from a yard of fabric into eight squares. These are ideal for small projects, such as doll quilts or miniature quilts, or for adding accent pieces to larger projects. They also allow quilters to try different fabric combinations without having to purchase a lot of fabric.

Fat Quarters are another popular choice. They are pieces of fabric that are cut from a yard of fabric into four squares. They are perfect for small projects or for incorporating different fabric patterns into a larger project. They are also great for creating quilts with a scrappy look.

5″ Squares, also known as charm packs, are sets of multiple 5″ fabric squares. They are perfect for small projects and for incorporating a variety of colors and patterns into a quilt. They are also great for using up scraps or for trying different fabric combinations.

10″ Squares, also known as a layer cake, are sets of multiple 10″ fabric squares. They are perfect for larger projects and for creating quilts with a scrappy look. They provide more fabric than a charm pack, but less than a yard of fabric, making them a great choice for quilters who want to try different fabric combinations.

2 1/2″ Strips, also known as a strip set or a jelly roll, are packs of fabric strips that are 2 1/2″ by width of fabric and are normally 42″ long. They are perfect for creating quilts with a scrappy look, or for making strip quilts. They are also great for using up scraps or for trying different fabric combinations.
