5 Gifts That Every Beginner Quilter Will Love

October 16, 2021 by Claudia Porter

Quilting has long been considered a classic crafting hobby and its popularity has never really faded, but in recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in the craft. With the rise of online tutorials and beginner-friendly patterns, more and more people are giving quilting a try. Whether you’re new to quilting or you’re shopping for someone who is, it’s important to have the right tools for the job.

For starters, a good quality sewing machine is essential. Look for a machine that is reliable, easy to use, and has a variety of stitch options. Next, consider a cutting mat, rotary cutter, and acrylic rulers. These tools will make it easier to cut the fabric into precise shapes and sizes. A design wall is also a great investment as it will help you see your quilt top come together and make sure your fabric placement is just right.

In addition to these essential tools, you might also consider purchasing a quilting book or two. There are plenty of great resources out there, from beginner’s guides to patterns and techniques. You can also find online communities and forums where you can connect with other quilters, ask questions, and share your projects.

With the right tools and resources, quilting can be a wonderful and rewarding hobby. Whether you’re creating a cozy bed quilt, a fun wall hanging, or a special gift, quilting is a craft that you can enjoy for years to come.

First-Time Quiltmaking – Learning to Quilt in Six Easy Lessons – This book will have you quilting in no time.  It’s ideal for a beginner who needs to learn the basics.

If you want to cut fabrics to quilt then you will need a self-healing cutting mat.  This one from Olfa is reversible and a good size for all kinds of projects.

To cut quilting fabric you need a good rotary cutter and this one is a nice option.

A big joke among quilters is that you can’t use their scissors for anything else.  Quilters love, and need, good scissors like these.

Rulers are a must so quilters can cut their fabric to the correct size.  This starter set has almost every size imaginable.

If you’re someone who has always been interested in quilting but never quite knew where to start, then I’m here to help! Quilting can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be hooked. Now I’ll be sharing my top tips for someone starting out in quilting from my own point of view.

Tip 1: Invest in a quality sewing machine  – Quality doesn’t have to mean $ either.  But you don’t want to waste time on a mini machine or any machine that is aimed at beginners, i feel those are always too temperamental and you won’t be a beginner for long.
The first thing you need to do is invest in a quality sewing machine. A good sewing machine will make your quilting experience so much easier and more enjoyable. When looking for a machine, you want to make sure it’s user-friendly and has a variety of stitch options. It’s also important to make sure the machine is easy to maintain and clean.

Tip 2: Buy fabric and tools
Once you have your sewing machine, you’ll need to buy fabric and tools. When choosing fabric, look for 100% cotton as it’s easy to work with and is durable. When it comes to tools, you’ll need a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and a ruler. These tools are essential for cutting your fabric and making sure your pieces are accurate.

Tip 3: Start with a simple project
Starting with a simple project is a great way to get your feet wet in the world of quilting. Choose a project that’s easy to follow and doesn’t require a lot of experience. A great place to start is with a simple wall hanging.

Tip 4: Watch tutorials and read books
Watching tutorials and reading books is a great way to learn new techniques and get inspiration for your projects. There are plenty of online tutorials available, and there are also many quilting books available at your local library or bookstore.

Tip 5: Join a quilting group
Finally, joining a quilting group is a great way to meet other quilters and learn new techniques. You’ll be able to ask questions, get advice, and share your projects with others.
