Is it Christmas without stockings hung in the house? Of course it is, but I’m willing to bet that lots of people have their stocking hung, just waiting to see what goodies they get filled with. For many, their handmade stocking that they got from grandma, or someone else special, is lovingly displayed every year. I still hang the one my Aunt made for me over 50 years ago. I can’t imagine not hanging it up. Looking for Holiday or Christmas themed Fabric prints? Check these out.

When you think about Christmas, what comes to mind? For many people the first thing that comes to mind is the holiday of Christmas. The word itself brings up images of candy canes, carols, and tree lighting ceremonies. But where did this tradition come from? Why do we decorate stockings in December? Why have stockings at all?
There are so many different ways that people celebrate Christmas throughout the world. Some countries have their own unique traditions and customs when it comes to the season. The history of Christmas Stocking has been traced back as far as ancient Celtic tribes. Let’s take a look at how this tradition came to be, its meanings today, and some examples of where it’s still celebrated today.
The Christmas Stocking is a traditional gift for children that is given at the end of the year to express gratitude. The tradition of giving children a stocking has been around for many years and it stems from the Pagan beliefs surrounding Yule. Yule is an ancient Norse celebration of the winter solstice and was first celebrated on December 21st. The gift-giving traditions associated with Yules and other celebrations were incorporated into Christianity during the early days of the new faith. Gifts were exchanged as a way to share the abundance of blessings that God had bestowed upon those who were part of Christ’s community. This explains why gifts are given to everyone at Christmas, which serves as a time to rejoice in God’s blessings instead of being consumed by materialism.
