Tot's Triangle Tote Free tutorial

Fill this cute tote with things to keep the little ones busy and your next outing will be a cinch. The bottom is made of pieced triangles sewn into rows. The handles sit between this and the top band. All of it is quilted for stability. This project features fabric from the Playground collection by Camelot Design Studio.

Modern Quilt using line Barbara Brackman I’m taking issue with the use of the word “modern” in today’s quilting world. I’m not alone. Mrs. Sew McCool recently wrote Four Reasons to Banish “Modern” from Sewing Vocabulary. If you only have time to read one blog post today, this one is it.

If you want to see some examples of 20th century quilts that look like they could be made today, you owe it to yourself to visit Historically Modern. A site curated by quilt historian, Barbara Brackman, she devotes an entire blog to this type of quilt.

It happens. Some projects, no matter how hard we try, yield less than desirable results. Alyssa of Measured and Slow found this out with her latest quilt, “Kisses”, a portion of which is shown here. She admits failure is not all bad, she did get a dress out of the disaster. I’m glad she shared this story, because this is an integral part of the creative process. With this one finished, she’s looking forward to starting her next quilt.

I believe some of our best work comes when we are not focused on the big things. Take Maureen Cracknell for instance. After releasing a new fabric collection for Art Gallery Fabrics called Wild & Free – yes, this is huge – she’s returned to thread sketching. Her results are beautiful, and the process meditative.

Quilt Trends The Quilter no moreSoon, you will cease to see these magazines on store shelves or in your mailbox. Sadly, the parent company, All American Crafts, closed its doors last week. Specifically dear to my heart are two of their publications, The Quilter and Quilt Trends.

Thanks goes to long time quilt designer and contributor to both magazines, Wendy Sheppard of Ivory Spring for bringing this to my attention. I turned to Google to find more information on this situation and only found other bloggers talking about it. A post I read – and think you should too – is by woodworker Sheila Landry. A designer like Wendy, she had many of her scroll saw designs showcased in All American Crafts magazine, Creative Woodworks and Crafts.

Halloween Parlor quilt RavenNothing foretells trouble ahead like a raven. Michelle of Michelle’s Romantic Tangle puts hers smack in the middle of this quilt. Appliqued to a fabric string block in neutral hues, she finishes the look with diamonds extending all the way to the binding. It’s an unusual choice, but it works. I’d love this on my wall come Halloween. Imagine the bird a crow, and set it out for Fall. She shares photos and instructions on her blog for how to make it; this includes the clip art bird.

TieBreaker Winner The Quilt Shop You’ve done it. You’ve broken the tie between the top two contenders in my Best Fabric Shop Storefront Contest. And the winner is…drum roll please…The Quilt Shop. This fabric shop is located in a picturesque Victorian village – Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Known as a haven for artists, I’ve heard from a reliable source (a sister to a working artist living there now), the city understands the seasonal nature of their income (think tourist town) and work with them on paying things like water and electricity during the cold winter months when the place is deserted. To clarify, we’re talking months, not years!

In honor of The Quilt Shop, I’m hosting a giveaway to a lucky Craft Gossip reader for a half yard bundle of each fabric in “Flutter” by Laura Gunn from Hawthorne Threads. With names like, Painters Canvas, it’s a fitting fabric collection for artists who work with fabric instead of paint. Pictured below is the Candy palette but the winner can choose any of the three color palettes, the other two are Sky and White. Contest Laura Gunn To be in the draw, leave a comment on this post by this Thursday, and tell me which of the fabric swatches above inspire you. Personally, I love the butterflies and birds. Good luck! Remember, contest ends at midnight August 21, 2014.

Rainbow quilt Michelle Buttontree LaneMichelle of Buttontree Lane shares her latest make, a quilt she affectionately calls, “Don’t Mess with My Rainbow”. It’s a stunner. She started with a jelly roll of bright fabric strips, paired them with a solid, then sewed them into half-square triangles. A one block quilt can look so much more complicated than it is. You can never go wrong with this type of design. She shares tons of photos of her quilt (shot outdoors), the back included.

Nap Mat Cheater Cloth Birch FabricsChristina McKinney shares a tutorial over at Birch Fabrics blog showing how to make this snuggle-ready nap mat for a preschooler. She used fleece and several fabrics from the Feather River collection created by Jay-Cyn Designs. The attached pillowcase is trimmed in one of my favorites, Feather River Patch. It’s what quilters call cheater cloth since it appears as if separate blocks have been sewn together, yet it’s printed that way. Talk about a time saver!
