Technique: Invisible thread applique

Alma from Blackbird Designs blog shares four adjustments she makes to her sewing machine to get the right results with invisible thread machine applique. In this photo she ran her bobbin thread through the bobbin holder to increase the bobbin tension. This ensures the bobbin thread does not show on the top of your piece. Go here to read more.

Video: Quilt binding all on the machine

Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times shares her method for finishing the binding on a quilt 100% on the sewing machine. This involves sewing the top and bottom of the binding at the same time instead of sewing one side down on the machine and securing the other by hand stiching. Get the know-how here.

Ta Dah!: Fussy cut bird on a chair

I’m a huge fan of modernist fabric designer Laurie Wisbrun of Scarlet Fig. Sue is too, she sent her this photo of a potholder she made using some of her original fabric Birdies on Chairs Red. Sue used a fussy cut* technique in this snazzy log cabin block. Great fabric and execution. Thanks to you both for show and tell.

*You’re being fussy when you cut your fabric out in a way that keeps the entire motif intact.

Hand-look stitch on sewing machine

Loose Ends is exploring ways to get the hand look of a quilting stitch on her sewing machine. She found a nice example of this at Eugenie.Qs ’s Gallery Dip-A-Dee Stiching, shown.

The trick she says is to use
colored thread in the bobbin, light monofilament thread through the needle. Go here to read more.

Book: Tile Quilt Revival

According to Barbara Brackman’s Material Culture, this book Tile Quilt Revival: Reinventing a Forgotten Form is coming out in January 2010.

She explains,

Tile quilts are done in an applique technique that covers the block, yet exposes the background in what looks like grout.

Sarah from The Cutting Table Quilt blog made this quilt from a charm pack, making it come together super fast. She says using precut fabrics is a great way to get back to sewing if you find yourself in a slump. I give her an A+ for her choice of colors and the scalloped border.
