Folk art quilter and teacher Sue Spargo talks about her recent trip to quilt shops The Rabbit’s Lair and Yellowbird Art where she taught her Altered Texture class. Go here to see some student work. Painterly Batik Cascade

I want one of everything in this new fabric line Batik Cascade by Karen Combs. My daughter just finished her first quilt, for a doll. I’m very pleased and proud of her. At one point during the making of it, she said, “I just don’t understand why anyone would have a stash, just use the fabric when you buy it.” I explained quilters use fabric like painters use paint. This painterly Batik Cascade is exactly what I was talking about. Divine.

I’ve been teaching quilting for years, but any time a student asks me to start figuring out dimensions, I panic. If the math part of quilting frustrates you, check out Dena Crain’s online class Math for Quilters beginning July 3rd at Quilt University. Go here to find out more. Two of my all time favorite quilting teachers have a new book Applique Outside the Lines available for preorder at their Piece o Cake Web site. AlthoughI have several of their books/CDs on needle-turn applique, I find I lack the patience to use this traditional applique technique. This book promises no rules, no rulers.
