“Get back in your sewing room” quilt project

Sarah from The Cutting Table Quilt blog made this quilt from a charm pack, making it come together super fast. She says using precut fabrics is a great way to get back to sewing if you find yourself in a slump. I give her an A+ for her choice of colors and the scalloped border. Ta Dah!: Readers Are Leaders quilt

Anya of Hills Creek Quilter blog made this Readers Are Leaders quilt as a nod to her son’s love of books. She said, My son Nick has been a voracious reader since first grade. All through elementary and middle school he read everything he could get his hands on. Go here to read more.

I used the exact same adjective – voracious – to describe my daughter Brittany’s love of books growing up. Now married with a young child*, she still reads every day. I think Nick will be a life long reader too.

* My grandbaby already loves books, but so far he’s a voracous eater, not reader!

Sun Bonnet Sue wields a knife

Dawn of Spring Water Designs blog posted some of her favorite quilts from the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza. This one made me laugh so hard - each block is a scene from a movie. Called Sun Bonnet Sue Does Hollywood, Sue shows up in Psycho, King Kong, Gone With the Wind, The Birds, Wizard of Oz, E.T., Titanic and many others. Meet Maddie

Maddie is my lovely niece who is making her first quilt. Not missing a beat (stitch), I invited her to come up for a visit to my house. I promised to take her on a field trip to The Rabbit’s Lair shop and let her pick out 16 fat quarters in honor of her having just turned 16.

Maddie decided to come, and she, along with her mom Robin and her Aunt Charlotte, spent the entire Labor Day weekend with me. On Saturday we (including my daughter Brittany and grandchild Rowan) all piled into the ‘burb and drove to Rogers, Arkansas where The Rabbit’s Lair is located. Maddie had no trouble finding 16 fat quarters to add to her stash. She got some beauties, favoring their wonderful selection of batiks.

Saturday evening we washed, dried and ironed all of her fabrics (she’s been gathering them for months). On Sunday, Maddie began cutting the strips that would become part of her queen size quilt.

She decided to do a string quilt using the Kaleidoscope quilt tutorial from Film in the Fridge blog. But instead of using white in the middle of her blocks like Ashley did, she would use brown.

Here is one of her blocks as she stitches the strips into place.

The cousins stayed up late and by Monday Maddie had completed six blocks. Doesn’t she look happy! Bravo Maddie, your Aunt Scarlett cannot wait to see the rest.

Don’t miss the “Art Quilt Walking” challenge

The Winter issue of the brand new magazine Art Quilting Studio will showcase art quilts submitted to what will be an ongoing feature of the magazine, Art Quilt Walking.

Jenny Doh of Crescendo blog explains Art Quilting Studio’s latest challenge, saying this time it will be art quilts inspired by the wisdom from a few lines of Johnny Cash’s Walk the Line song.

“I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you’re mine, I walk the line.”
