Tile quilts are done in an applique technique that covers the block, yet exposes the background in what looks like grout.

This quilt is constructed in a Barn Raising pattern in which light and dark fabrics are arranged to form concentric diamonds. Made mostly of cotton and wool with some silk pieces, it was probably intended as a functional bedcover.

During the economic slump of the early twentieth century, string style quilt making thrived. Rural mid-century women, cut off from mainstream society and markets, founded their own string quilt style. The twenty-first century version is known as selvedge edge quilts.*
